Smokejumpers Werebear 6: Quint and Lystra Read online
Page 7
Quint felt disoriented for a second. Chloe was staring at the body with a blank expression.
“Where did you come from?” Quint blurted out. “Why are you here?”
“I’m really sorry that I didn’t trust you guys,” she said, holding her stomach. “I’m a reporter at heart. I followed you to investigate.”
Quint smiled in relief. “Well I’m damn glad that you did.”
The broken tracker was displayed on the table. Dexter was staring at it, shaking his head. “They must know where we are.”
“Why would he come alone?” Beckett asked himself.
Lystra exhaled. Of course he came alone. “Logan thought that he was tougher than he was. He probably thought he could handle it.”
“They’re going to come after us,” Dexter said. “And this time they’ll send more than one agent.”
Silence filled the tent. All of the bear shifters of the Hudson Crew and the Rockland Crew were inside around the table. Lystra was the only female in the tent.
“We have to strike first,” Beckett said. “We can only win this if we’re on the offense.”
“This is our terrain,” Mitch, the second of the Rockland Crew, said. “Nobody can beat us up here in our mountains.”
Dexter was nodding.
“No,” Beckett said. “We have to bring the fight to the SEA headquarters. If we beat them here we will be seen as outlaws. If we beat them there we’ll be seen as revolutionaries, there to overthrow the corrupt leaders.” He stared at the table. “It has to be there.”
Dexter stood up and paced the room. “It’s dangerous.”
Beckett glanced around the tent, catching the eyes of every member of his Crew. It was subtle but every man nodded when Beckett looked to him. They were with him. Until the end. Lystra would be too.
“It will be dangerous,” Beckett said, “and I understand if you don’t want to come. But we’re taking the fight to them.”
The Rockland Crew members looked to Dexter. He was biting his lip and looking at the ground, thinking.
“Whatever you decide Dex,” Ant said.
Dexter looked up at Lystra. “What do you think?”
All eyes were on her. She didn’t want to lead these guys to their deaths but the SEA had to be stopped for the good of all shifters.
“I know the layout of the buildings,” she said. “I’ll help.”
Quint cursed under his breath. He stared at her with sad eyes. Of course he wanted her safe for Micha but did he have any doubt that she would help them? Besides, they desperately needed her dragon.
Dexter took a deep breath and then nodded his head. “Okay,” he said. “But we have to do this intelligently.”
“We’ll get the word out among shifter crews,” Mitch said. “We’ll need every tooth and paw that we can get.”
“Good,” Dexter said. “Head upstate with Uriah. Reacher and Ant can head into Canada. There’s a bunch of shifter camps up there that hate the SEA more than we do.”
“We have to abandon the camp,” Beckett said, glancing at the broken tracker on the table.
“I know a place where we can set up,” Dexter said. “It’s an abandoned Gold Rush town in the mountains. They’ll never find us there.”
“Good,” Beckett said. “We’ll need someone to head back to the Agency headquarters to keep an eye on things and make sure we’re not walking into an ambush.”
Lystra glanced around the room. She would do it but she was too recognizable. She couldn’t be anywhere near there.
A handsome man with soft green eyes stood up. Lystra couldn’t recall his name. She had met so many people in the past two days.
“I’ll go,” he said.
“Are you sure Sander?” Beckett asked.
Sander nodded. “I’m the only one without a mate,” he said, swallowing. “The SEA doesn’t know what I look like. I’ll do it.”
“Thank you,” Beckett whispered.
The men started clapping for him. It was a dangerous thing that he had just volunteered for.
“Wait,” a man said, jumping up from his chair. He was the Rockland Crew cook. Lystra recognized him from the kitchen. He always wore a blue bandanna. “I’ll go too,” he said, glaring at Sander.
Sander rolled his eyes and looked away, shaking his head.
“Thank you Remy,” Dexter said. “It will be much safer with the two of you.”
Sander sat back down in his chair and stared at the table with a furrowed brow and crossed his arms. He didn’t look happy.
“Both chefs gone?” Keene asked with a look of panic on his face. “Who is going to cook for us?”
“Do you want to volunteer?” Ellis asked.
Finch chuckled. “He’ll eat everything before it gets to the table.”
“Great,” Ellis said. “Then Keene will cook and you will make sure he doesn’t eat everything. You’ll make quite the team.”
Finch’s mouth dropped. He looked to Beckett.
“He’s your number two,” Beckett said, with a laugh. “You follow his orders as well.”
Finch and Keene’s shoulders slumped.
“And boys?” Beckett said.
They perked up, hoping to get off the hook. “I feel like Thai food tonight.”
The guys laughed as Finch whispered to Keene; “What the hell is Thai food?”
Dexter raised his hand for silence. Beckett got up and stood by his side. “Ten days,” he said.
Beckett nodded. “We’ll storm the headquarters in ten days. Unless Sander and Remy’s surveillance tells us something different.”
Sander and Remy gave each other dirty looks. That was going to be an interesting trip.
“You guys know what to do,” Beckett said, recapping. “I’ll get Amanda to drop everyone off where they need to go. Mitch and Uriah will head upstate, and Reacher and Ant will head to Canada. Sander and Remy will head back to Montana, and Keene and Finch will head into the kitchen and go make us sandwiches.”
The men laughed as they stood up from the table.
“But in all seriousness,” Beckett said. “We need you to be careful out there. The agency will be on high alert and half of us are wanted with a death sentence. Use your heads. But most importantly…” he glanced to Keene and Finch, “no crusts on my sandwich.”

Sander waved to the plane as it flew away. Amanda gave him a thumbs up out the pilot’s window.
She had dropped them off just outside of Montana. Beckett didn’t want her entering the state so she dropped them off halfway and they would travel the rest of the way on foot.
“Which way is it?” Remy asked, looking around the forest.
Sander rolled his eyes. “You go that way,” he said.
“What’s down there?” Remy asked, looking behind him with that stupid blue bandanna still on his head.
“A cooking school,” Sander said, storming off in the opposite direction.
Why the hell did Remy have to volunteer? He only spoke up when Sander was getting some recognition.
“Is that where you went?” Remy asked, catching up. “To some small cooking school in the middle of the woods? I see now. That’s why your bourbon pecan chicken was dry.”
Sander spun around on his heels. “How dare you! At least I don’t over salt my salmon Wellington.”
“That’s right,” Remy said, with his hands on his hips. “You pull it out of a TV dinner box.”
Sander clenched his jaw as they glared at each other.
“Look,” Remy said, lowering his hands. “Dexter and Beckett said that we have to get along. We’re going to be together for at least ten days. Let’s just try to bury the hatchet.”
Sander exhaled and thought about it for a second. He really hated this guy.
Remy smirked. “So just admit that I’m a true chef and you’re just a glorified dishwasher and we can get along just fine.”
Sander turned and stormed off through the forest, fuming. Remy followed him.
“What kind of stupid name is Remy anyways?” Sander asked.
“I’m French,” Remy said. “It means master chef.”
“It means obnoxious foreigner,” Sander said. He pointed behind him, into the forest. “France is that way.”
“I’m from Quebec,” he said, shaking his head. “Anyways, what kind of name is Sander? Were your mother and father power tools?”
Sander turned and stuck his finger in Remy’s face ready to tell him off when a scream echoed through the forest.
They froze, their ears perking up.
“It was from over there,” Sander whispered, pointing.
“I know that,” Remy said. “I have ears.”
They ran through the trees, careful to stay downwind and careful not to make any noise.
Sander sniffed the air. Two bear shifters and a panther shifter.
The trees became sparser as they went forward. There was a road in the distance with a black jeep, parked on the shoulder. It was the same jeep that the Shifter Enforcement Agency used.
“SEA,” Sander whispered.
Another scream ripped through the forest. It was a woman’s scream.
The two bear shifters ran forward and ducked behind a huge boulder. Sander peeked from around the rock.
There were two male agents in their human form standing in front of the woman. She yanked an empty syringe from her neck and threw it on the side of the road.
She was sweating and breathing heavily. She was glaring at the agents with pure hatred oozing out of her stunning blue eyes.
Sander knew that he should go help her but he couldn’t move. He was frozen to the ground, staring at this beauty in awe. She was curvy with big hips and voluptuous breasts. Her clothes were dirty and ripped and her long, red hair was a mess. She looked like she had been on the run for days.
The two agents lunged towards her and Sander and Remy darted up from behind the boulder, ready to help.
But the woman did not need their help. At all. She smashed her fist into the agent on the right and grabbed the other one’s arm as the first one fell. She snapped his arm in two places and then kicked him in the stomach with lightning speed. The first one stumbled up to his feet and the woman kicked him in the nuts. She rained down fists and feet on their defeated bodies as Sander and Remy watched with wide eyes.
The two SEA agents crawled away and managed to stumble into their jeep and take off.
The woman brushed the dirt off her clothes and turned, catching Sander’s eye.
It was like he was being yanked into a black hole. The world disappeared around him as everything, except her, faded to black.
But she was still there.
Only her.
His bear was bonding to her. He knew immediately because it wasn’t like anything he had ever experienced before. It was like every cell in his body was rebooting, with this woman now the only focus of his existence. The only thing that mattered.
As suddenly as it came on it was over. He shook his head, clearing his blurry vision. Sander took a deep breath, knowing that his life would never be the same. She was in it and no matter what would happen from this moment on, his life would be better for having known her. If only for a minute.
He had forgotten that Remy was at his side. He glanced over at his unwanted partner and his heart sank.
Remy was staring at the woman with his eyes blackened over and his body shaking.
He was bonding to her as well.
